Natural and Manufactured Fibres Need Specific Questions

Avoid reducing a material choice to one broad label.

Look a little closer

The words natural and manufactured group many different fibres. They do not, on their own, answer questions about a particular accessory’s care, feel or suitability. A finished product may also combine several materials and treatments.

A note for your design book

Start with a concrete question such as the care information supplied for a scarf or the declared composition of a lining. Record the actual label and product context. Do not turn a broad fibre category into an automatic good-or-bad ranking or an environmental claim. Museum material descriptions offer a useful vocabulary, while a responsible comparison needs evidence about the specific product and question.
