Look a little closer
A small repeat may appear almost textured from a distance, while a larger motif can dominate a scarf’s appearance. Neither effect is automatically better. View a pattern at two scales and describe what remains visible before choosing how to use it in a composition.
A note for your design book
Draw one original motif in two repeat sizes on paper. Compare the balance of marked and unmarked space, keeping the colours constant. A textile collection provides examples of printed, woven and embroidered surfaces with their own techniques and histories. Your exercise is a way to explore scale rather than a forecast of how a fabric will drape or perform.
