Look a little closer
An old bag or textile can carry evidence of materials, making, use and repair. Unfamiliar brittleness, loose components or an uncertain surface may make an everyday cleaning habit inappropriate. Reading a short article does not establish the expertise needed to intervene.
A note for your design book
Gather the object’s records, existing photographs and a factual description of the question. Avoid performing tests or treatments just to provide a more complete story. Consult a qualified conservator when the object’s historical or material context calls for it. Educational reading can improve the questions you bring, while the decision about actual treatment needs assessment of the object itself.
