Look a little closer

An accessory’s colour can look different under changing illumination, and conservation guidance treats light as part of a collection’s environment. A photograph records one set of conditions; it does not establish that a display is suitable for every material.

A note for your design book

For a personal visual study, note the light source and keep comparison photographs consistent. For a historical object, follow the institution’s handling and display guidance rather than setting a universal exposure limit from this article. Distinguish a pleasing image from a preservation decision. A short environmental note helps future readers understand why the same surface may appear different in another photograph.
